Paris IAS Ideas - What is bias? And why are we biased?
IEA de PARIS / 14.11.2025
Description: Lecture as part of the "Paris IAS Ideas" series. These short presentations mark the beginning of one-month writing residencies during which visiting scholars write an article presenting the "definitive" version of an idea or concept they have been working on for years. Online lecture by Gerd Gegerenzer, former Director of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Director of the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the University of Potsdam, and Vice-President of the European Research Council (ERC). He is a fellow in writing residency in November 2025 at the Paris IAS.
What is bias? And why are we biased?
Presentation: This project explores the concept of ‘bias’ and the multiple ways in which it is interpreted. The same behaviour can seem both rational and irrational: following base rates is consistent with Bayes, but can be perceived as prejudice. A similar tension arises between disciplines: in behavioural economics, rationality is synonymous with absence of bias, while in machine learning, a certain amount of bias is essential to produce reliable predictions and avoid overfitting. The online conference will propose that this contradiction can be resolved by Savage and Simon's distinction between ‘small worlds’ and ‘big worlds’. In a small, perfectly known world, bias is harmful. But in the uncertainty of large worlds, it becomes a rational and functional tool: bias is no longer a flaw, it is a strategy.

Can You Trust Your Gut? with Gerd Gigerenzer, PhD, MGC Ep. 77
Emeran Mayer, MD / The Mind Gut Conversation Podcast / 29.09.2024
Description: In this episode of the Mind-Gut Conversation, Emeran Mayer talks to Dr. Gerd Gigerenzer, an icon in the field of intuition research and gut-based decision making. This episode covers a number of fascinating topics, including:
What are the main differences between a rational and an intuitive decision?
Are females better at making intuitive decisions, or is this idea a prejudice based on our paternalistic bias?
Does the advantage of decisions based on intuition vs rational thinking depend on the context?
Does AI make intuitive decisions?
Gerd Gigerenzer: Mindless Statistics
Broken Science Initiative / 24.04.2024
Description: In his talk at the Broken Science Epistemology Camp in March 2024, psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer addresses what he calls ‘mindless statistics.’ Rather than think critically about the implications, impact, and meaning of studies, researchers are trapped in a system which rewards publication and statistical significance. The pressure to publish has encouraged them to p-hack, slice data, and essentially cheat their way into showing the importance of their research. Professor Gigerenzer dives into the history of statistical analysis in his field of psychology, which has led to a paradigm of rituals in place of meaningful thought.

Gerd Gigerenzer: How to stay smart in a smart world
Bioethics and Law Center Tel Aviv University / 27.09.2023

Background: From self-driving cars and dating apps to recidivism prediction and cancer diagnosis, the increasing presence of AI has been widely championed – but there are limitations and risks too. Is more data always a good thing? When do algorithms make better decisions than humans, when not? What is the difference between human and machine intelligence? And how can we stay in control in an increasingly automated world? Based on Gigerenzer’s book "How to Stay Smart in a Smart World: Why Human Intelligence Still Beats Algorithms"

Gerd Gigerenzer | How to Stay Smart in a Smart World | Talks at Google
Talks at Google / 17.09.2022
Description: Gerd Gigerenzer discusses his latest book "How to Stay Smart in a Smart World: Why Human Intelligence Still Beats Algorithms", a comprehensive guide on how to stay in charge in a world populated by algorithms that beat us in chess, find us romantic partners, and tell us to “turn right in 500 yards.” Doomsday prophets of technology predict that robots will take over the world, leaving humans behind in the dust. Tech industry boosters think replacing people with software might make the world a better place - while tech industry critics warn darkly about surveillance capitalism. Despite their differing views of the future, they all agree: machines will soon do everything better than humans. In "How to Stay Smart in a Smart World", Gerd Gigerenzer shows why we shouldn’t trust smart technology unconditionally, but we shouldn’t fear it unthinkingly, either.
Gerd Gigerenzer on How to Stay Smart in a Smart World 8/1/22
EconTalk / 01.08.2022
Description: IBM’s super-computer Watson was a runaway success on Jeopardy! But it wasn't nearly as good at diagnosing cancer. This came as no surprise to Max Planck Institute psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer, who argues that when it comes to life-and-death decisions, we’ll always need real, not artificial, brains. Listen as the author of How to Stay Smart in a Smart World tells EconTalk host Russ Roberts why computers aren’t nearly as smart as we think. But, Gigerenzer says, human beings need to get smarter in order to avoid being manipulated by people who use AI for their own ends.

Risk literacy: Gerd Gigerenzer at TEDxZurich
TEDx Talks / 09.12.2013
Description: In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes. We learn to read and write but not how to deal with uncertainty: we are risk illiterates. Why do we fear what's unlikely to kill us? Is it true that people are basically hopeless when it comes to managing health and wealth? Some experts have concluded that Homo Sapiens ("man the wise") is a misnomer, and that John and Jane Q. Public need continuous guidance, as a child needs a parent. Against this pessimistic view, Gerd Gigerenzer argues that everyone can learn to deal with risk and uncertainty, and that experts can be part of the problem rather than the solution. A democracy needs risk-savvy citizens who cannot be easily frightened into surrendering their money, their welfare, and their liberty. We should begin to teach risk literacy to everyone.
